Pre-conception Care and Planning your pregnancy
So you have decided to have a baby? Congratulations. You are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime! I know now that you have finally made the decision you are probably really excited about getting started. And probably wanting to get pregnant fast.
But before you throw away those birth control pills you should seriously consider undertaking some pre-pregnancy preparation in the form of Pre-conception Care.
Not only will preconception care provide you with a healthier baby, but it will improve your chances of having a normal and safe pregnancy and a more straight forward labour. Not to mention helping you fall pregnant a lot quicker.
It is important to know that not only will you carry this baby in your womb for nine months, but the health of you and your partner’s genes will determine the health of your baby and the ease in which you carry it through until full term. The health of your genes will determine your baby’s risks of birth defects and ongoing health issues throughout its life.
To improve your chances of conceiving and producing a healthy baby, you both need to be as healthy as you can be.

Men should also consider swapping briefs for boxers to help improve their fertility. With 1 in 6 couples now experiencing infertility issues it is important that you do everything you can to improve your chances of a natural conception.
Apart from a healthy diet you should also consider vitamin supplementation, particularly considering that such vitamins as Folic Acid can reduce the risks of Spina Bifida as much as 92% and Zinc can dramatically improve the health of a man’s reproductive system. Please read our article on Preconception vitamins for more information.
On top of supplementing with vitamins, it is also very important that women are aware that they should not diet prior to conception, as being underweight or following a low-calorie or low-fat diet can cause menstrual irregularities and depress hormone levels, which in turn can suppress ovulation and make it difficult to conceive.
If you do need to lose weight before you try for a baby, do this first, and then embark on your preconception care.
If you are overweight you will improve your chances of conceiving by getting yourself into, or as close to a healthy weight range as you can. This will also make it easier for you to get back to a healthy weight after the baby is born.

As it takes three months for both eggs and sperm to develop, the health of a new embryo will depend on what your health was like a whole three months before that lucky egg and sperm even met.
This means that to give this new life every chance, you both need to undertake at least three months of preconception care before you even begin trying to conceive.
So what does pre conception care involve? Well firstly, you both need to follow a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a balanced diet, minimising your exposure to environmental chemicals such as second-hand smoke, reducing alcohol consumption and eliminating cigarettes and party drugs.
