Nappies and Supplies

You may start off not having a clue how to change a baby’s nappy.  However, with a newborn needing around 10 nappy changes a day, you will have changed around 1000 nappies by the time they enter their fourth month.

Deciding whether or not to use disposable or cloth Nappies is a highly contentious topic at the moment, particularly with global warming and mothers worrying about their carbon footprints.

However, at the end of the day you need to use what will work best for you, considering your budget and how much spare time you have.

Buying Nappies

Babies may be small, but they need a lot of stuff, and most of that stuff is expensive.  Along with nappies, there are also a bucket load of care products such as lotions, creams and wipes that you will need to use both in the house and when away from home.

The best way to buy baby products are in bulk and when they are on special.  Another way is to buy them online directly from the manufacturer or warehouse.

Below are some links that may help you shop.
Cloth Nappies

Pros

No disposable waste
Cheaper to use in the long run
Less Carbon footprint
More natural, no chemical or plastic near babies
You can’t run out of them
Good to use when baby is healing from nappy rash

Cons

Time consuming with washing, folding etc
Higher usage of water, electricity and chemicals
You need to buy separate nappy liners

Disposable Nappies

Pros

Quick and easy – time saving
Portable
Less chance of nappy rash if nappy changed regularly
Easy to buy – available in every supermarket
Usually smaller and a more snug fit

Cons

Creates waste which takes 100’s of years to decompose
Expensive
Disposable nappies versus cloth nappies

Disposable nappies have become the norm, for many busy mums, particularly when you consider that to use cloth nappies you need the time to soak, wash, hang and fold each nappy.  If you are deciding what to do when it comes to nappies, then it basically comes down to four things; convenience, cost, health and comfort and the environment.
