Nanna’s Home Hints
Our mother’s and grandmothers grew up around the house, following their mother’s around and learning everything there is to know about being a good housewife, from getting out stains, to making home bread to darning socks.
Unfortunately with the increase in modern technology and the push from women’s liberation, many of these old tips, and secrets have over time been lost.
Many of these secrets do save us time and money, so I thought I would dig around, ask some questions, and ask Nanna about some of those secrets.
Stop mirrors from misting
Rub a small amount of washing up liquid over the mirror and rub and polish in.
Cleaning mattresses
Do not use water, try using a special ‘dry clean’ foam available from supermarkets.
Clean a dirty iron
Rub a cold iron with a cut lemon, then wash off with a cold wet cloth. Follow by polishing the iron with a dry cloth.
Chopping board orders
Rub your chopping board with a cut lemon
Freshen your microwave
Place a cut lemon in a bowl of water and place in your microwave for 30 seconds on high. Wipe out with a clean cloth.
