Party Planning - Getting Started
Choose a date, a time, and decide how long you want the party to run. 2- 3 hours is usually sufficient.
Choose a venue - home, park, catered venue
Choose a theme - standard party or theme e.g. Pirate or fairy
Decide on numbers and write an ‘invite’ list - don’t forget to ask about allergies

A simple plan
3 weeks out
Set, time, date, theme and venue
Decide on who and how many guests
Write invitations and post or hand out to guests – don’t forget to ask about allergies
Put together a checklist
2 weeks out
Confirm guest numbers
Plan menu, games, music, entertainment, etc.
Purchase decorations, and any equipment for games and entertainment
Purchase prizes and/or thank you cards
Purchase any extra cutlery, plates, loot bags etc.
Organise to borrow any equipment like extra tables and chairs, eskies or sun-shelters
1 week out
Go through your checklist
Write a shopping list for food and drinks
Organise cake or buy ingredients
Prepare lolly bags
If party is outdoors, make sure lawn is mowed and outdoor area is clean and safe for visitors
Night before
Tidy the house and garden, and clean bathroom, put out extra toilet paper and tissues.
If fine weather and the party is outdoors, set up tables and chairs and put up marquee if you have one.
If the party is at a park, then pack as much of the car as you can. (remember to pack sunscreen and aeroguard)
Make up fruit, chopped vegie and dip platters the night before. To keep fresh cover in a damp paper towel and cover with glad wrap.
Do preparations on any other food that you can.
If you are making the cake, bake it the night before to be iced in the morning.
Put up the decorations and blow up the balloons. You can make it a fun activity for the whole family to be involved in after a special family dinner.
Set up or get out everything you need for the games.
Get out all eating utensils, cups, napkins etc.
Check video and digital camera is charged.
On the day
Make or pick up the birthday cake.
Pick up ice if you need it.
Set the table with last minute decorations and trays ready for food.
Prepare food and beverages.
Set up games.
Get out loot / lolly bags.
Check camera charged.
Lock up pets or take them to a neighbours house for a few hours.
Sit back and relax and enjoy the party............
