As great as it is to have your child taught how to swim by a trained professional, sometimes time, money or simply the chaos of a young family can make it almost impossible to get to a swimming lesson.

Another option is to teach your baby or child to swim yourself.  You can use a home pool, a friend’s pool or go to a public pool.

Dear Baby Boat,

I am visiting my daughter in Brisbane from the UK and she was struggling to find the time to take her 3 children to swimming lessons.  My grand-children are 4, 2, and 7 months just getting them all ready to go to swimming lessons seemed a hassle and we hung out at the swim school for over an hour and the baby is on a waiting list. 

I then thought there must be an easier way and googled DIY swimming and found this great website with a do it yourself swimming lessons.  Myself and the grandchildren have watched the DVD and then we go and practice in the neighbours pool and within a few sessions the 2 & 4 year old are swimming with confidence.  My daughter tried it with the baby and after a couple of lessons my grandson is blowing bubbles in the water - very sweet.  She wishes she found this a few years ago and would have saved loads of money and time.
