When it comes to gifts, you can either have a registry, a wishing well, or leave it to chance. As many of us are very practical these days, we hope to receive gifts that are useful and practical more so then just out right cute, so try to use your shower in the best way you can.
If you have nothing, then every gift will come in handy, however if like many of us you will be receive a few hand me downs then you can try putting together a list the same way you would with a wedding and asking one girlfriend to co-ordinate filling your wish list along with your other friends.
Some women now have “Nappy and Wipes” parties, where people bring along a packet of wipes or nappies or other practical baby goods, which can be fantastic as baby care products don’t come cheap.
If you have a creative friend you may be lucky enough to receive a “Nappy Cake”. Which is basically a whole stack of rolled up cloth nappies which have been pinned together and then layered and decorated to resemble a cake.
But if you like surprises then just sit back, relax and enjoy all the gifts you receive on the day.
Just like a Hen’s night, Baby Showers are meant to be about fun and having a bit of a laugh before your baby arrives. So consider having a fancy dress or theme day, and organising a few games on the day.
Try to get together a few little gifts and prizes. The prizes could include nail polish, a bottle or wine, or some hand cream. You can have prizes for each game, or an overall winner for the day, being the person with the highest number of points accumulated over the day. No matter what you do, just remember that the day is about having fun and having a laugh with your girlfriends before the baby arrives.
Sometimes you will have people at the party that are meeting for the first time, so you may want to have a few icebreaker games to get things going. Though really all a successful shower needs is you and your best girlfriends, a few delicious snacks and a sense of fun.
If you are not sure on what sorts of games to play I have listed a few of the well known and most popular shower games around today. Some are quite easy to play and others may need a little preperation, such as making up lists, undertaking some photocopying or buying a few bits and pieces such as baby food or craft items. So let’s have a look at some of the games you can play on the day.
The Clothes Peg Game
As each guest arrives, you should welcome them and give them two pegs. Explain that they should place the pegs on their clothes and that you will explain the rules once everyone arrives.
The rules of the game are simple. You simply choose a particular work that will be taboo for the day. In most cases the word “baby” is a great word that is almost impossible not to at a baby shower! If you hear someone say the taboo word, you take one of their pegs and add it to your clothes. The winner is the person with the most pegs at the end of the day.
A variation could include not crossing your legs, or not playing with your hair.
Naughty or Nice
The idea of this game is to compile a list of questions, and each person must answer the question honestly. Points are added or subtracted depending on the answer. Depending whether or not you want the winner to be naughty or nice will depend on whether points are added or subtracted.
You can keep the questions nice for example:
2 points if you have toe nail polish on, but loose 2 points if it is chipped, or
2 points if you have silky smooth legs, but loose 2 points if you need a shave.
Or you may want to make them a bit naughtier for a bit of fun. For example
2 points if you have made love this week, but loose 2 if it was in the bedroom, or
2 points if you own an adult DVD, but loose 2 if it hasn’t been out of the draw in 6 months.
Pin the Baby on the Belly
This game is derived from the child’s game Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey. Basically to play the game you will need a blindfold, a picture of a baby (from a magazine or your own artwork), some blu-tack and a big hand-drawn picture of a pregnant belly (side profile is best). Once you have drawn the outline of the belly, choose a spot inside the belly and trace around your baby picture, this will become the target.
Each guest then takes it in turn to be blindfolded, spun around and sent on wobbly legs towards the poster. Each person’s attempt is marked with their initials. Basically the person who gets closest to the baby outline wins.
A variation of this game can be a cut out of a dummy and a big baby’s mouth.
Guess the Baby Food
For this game you will need about jars of baby food. Try to get a variety of sweet and savoury varieties. Either wrap the jars covering the labels or put them into separate bowls ensuring you mark them A, B, C or 1, 2, 3.
Each guest should be given a pen and paper and before taking it in turns to taste the food, whilst trying to guess the ingredients. Each correct ingredient will earn the taster one point. The winner of course will have the most points.
Nursery Rhyme games
There are quite a few games that you can play which involve nursery rhymes. You can put together a quiz, where each guest writes down the answer to a certain question. Or give each guest a list of lines from nursery rhymes, and get them to fill in the blanks. Or simply get everyone to sit in a circle and get everyone to take turns in coming up with a nursery rhyme. If you draw a blank or repeat a nursery rhyme you are out. Like most of the games the last person left standing or the one with the most points wins.
e.g. Humpty Dumpty ___ on the wall.
