Indoor Activities for Babies and Kids
When the weather is turns nasty, is too hot, or you just feel like staying in, you need to find ways to pass the time and keep your little one amused.
The Blue Clam
Remember the blue clam, that blue plastic tub with two sides to it, that you could fill with sand and water, well they still sell them and kids still love them. So for around $25 they are a great way to have some fun. On sunny days take them out, and on rainy days set them up on the kitchen floor.
Another way to use the blue clam is to fill it with cheap plastic balls and create your own ball pit.
Cubby House
Make a cubby house. Throw a blanket over the kitchen table, a couple of chairs or get a little more creative. Whichever way you look at it, cubby houses are fun and a new way for your baby to play.
Make a Boredom box
Create a boredom box. Find a big box that can be filled with all sorts of boredom busting arts and crafts bits and bobs. To get started, the kids can paint and decorate the box, and then spend some time trying to decide what to fill it up with: The box should contain all sorts of things for arts and crafts, for example pencils, paper, stickers, wool, bits of material, glitter, magnets, safety pins, blue tak, drinking straws, paints, play dough, sticky tape, glue, cotton wool and balloons.
The matchbox hunt
For this activity your child will need an empty matchbox or other small box or plastic container. Once each child has their empty box, they will then be given half an hour to fill the box with as many objects as they can. At the end of the allocated 30 minutes the person with the most objects in their box wins. There are a few rules though, like 2000 pieces of sand or salt don’t count. There can’t be anything sharp or dangerous and the lid of the box must be able to be closed.
Make your own comic or story book
Get some old newspapers and magazines, as well as some glue, plain paper, pencils, a stapler and some scissors.
Cut pictures from the magazines and newspapers and use them to create a story. You can make up a story, use an existing story or reenact a holiday or other fun family event. Make sure that you add fun and interesting speech balloons. Once all the pages are complete, staple the pages together, and add your title and author page.
